Getting started

MikeFoodCoach is built around one idea: the path to a healthy diet starts with knowing what you're actually eating. The app makes that nearly effortless.

  1. Start your free trial. New subscribers get 7 days free; after that it's a monthly or yearly subscription billed by Apple. Prices are always shown in the app before you confirm anything.
  2. Set your targets. The app starts you at 2,000 calories a day with a protein goal you can set as grams or as a percentage of calories. Adjust both anytime in Settings → Daily targets.
  3. Log your first meal. Tap Type, Talk, or Photo on the home screen and tell Mike what you ate. That's it — he does the math.

Logging meals

Three ways to log

  • Talk. Tap Talk and say it: "two eggs, a slice of sourdough toast and a latte with oat milk." Your speech is transcribed on your iPhone, the coach estimates the nutrition, and the meal is logged. The coach answers out loud — hands-free.
  • Type. Same thing, written. Shorthand is fine; "leftover chili, big bowl" works.
  • Photo. Snap your plate (or pick a photo from your library). The coach identifies the food and estimates calories, protein, carbs, and fat.

Pro tip: photograph your kitchen scale

Put the food on your scale and snap a photo that includes the display. The coach reads the weight right off the scale — "242 g mushrooms" — and uses it for a tighter estimate. Weighing is the single best way to improve accuracy.

Eating as you go

You don't have to log a meal all at once. Mention items as they happen — the coach collects them into the current meal and logs everything once when you're done. If you describe something that looks like it's already in today's log, the coach asks before logging it again, so re-describing a meal to add one item won't double-count it.

How good are the estimates?

Honest answer: they're estimates. Portion sizes from a photo, restaurant dishes, and home recipes all involve judgment, and the numbers can be off. They're plenty good for seeing your day and your week clearly — and they get better when you mention amounts or weigh things. The app labels them as estimates because that's what they are.

Fixing your log

  • Last 7 days: fully editable. Open a day to add, edit, or delete anything — either by telling the coach or by editing the entry directly. Forgot yesterday's dinner? Just add it.
  • Older days: view-only. After a week, days become part of the record. You can browse them anytime under Settings → Past history.
  • Deleted or edited a meal? If you sync to Apple Health, the edit or delete is reflected there too.

Targets

Settings → Daily targets. Calories adjust in steps of 50; protein can be a percentage of calories or a fixed grams-per-day. There's no "right" number built into the app — the targets are yours, and the defaults are just a starting point.

Targets in MikeFoodCoach are general guidelines, not medical advice, and nutrition numbers are estimates. Everyone's needs are different — check your targets for yourself, and talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before changing how you eat, especially if you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take medication.

The week view

The home screen shows your last 7 days as colored dots so the week reads at a glance:

  • Green — within 10% of your calorie target.
  • Yellow — 10–20% above or below target.
  • Red — more than 20% above or below target.
  • Blue — nothing (or very little) logged, so the day can't be scored.
  • White — you confirmed it was a deliberately light day or a fast. The app doesn't encourage or discourage fasting; it just notes it.
  • 🌴 — a planned break (vacation mode). Not scored.

The ✓ under a day means you marked "I logged everything this day" — your own signal that the number is the real number.

Notes & the weekly check-in

Daily note: each day you can log a mood, rate how you feel you're doing (1–5), jot a free-text note, and mark "I logged everything." Thirty seconds, and it gives your week context that numbers alone can't.

Weekly check-in: tap Weekly Check-in and the coach reviews your last 7 days — meals, totals, and your notes together — and talks it through with you: what went well, what to watch, what to try this week. You can ask follow-up questions, have it read aloud, and revisit past check-ins anytime. Optional reminders (Settings → Reminders): a Sunday check-in nudge and an evening "did you log dinner?" nudge. Both are off by default.

Fresh start & planned breaks

  • Fresh start hides earlier days from your week and check-ins — useful after time off or a rough stretch when you want the coach looking forward, not backward. It's undoable, and nothing is deleted.
  • Planned breaks let you tell the app you're off — vacation, holiday, whatever. Break days show a 🌴, aren't scored, and the coach welcomes you back when it ends instead of scolding you about the gap.

Apple Health

Settings → Apple Health → "Save meals to Apple Health." When it's on, each meal's calories, protein, carbs, and fat are written to the Health app, and edits or deletes in MikeFoodCoach update Health too. The integration is write-only: the app never reads anything from Health. If you declined Health access originally, enable it in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → MikeFoodCoach.

Your data & privacy

  • Your log lives on your iPhone. Meals, notes, targets, and check-in history are stored on your device — we don't keep a copy on our servers. (That also means the log doesn't sync between devices today.)
  • Export anytime. Settings → Export my data produces a CSV of your meals and notes via the share sheet.
  • Deleting the app deletes your data. Export first if you want to keep it.
  • What leaves the device: your messages to the coach (and meal photos) are sent over an encrypted connection to generate the reply, then they're gone — not stored, not used to train AI models. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Subscription & billing

  • Plans. MikeFoodCoach is a subscription — $9.99/month or $99.99/year — with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Current prices are always shown in the app (Settings → Subscription → View subscription plans) and on the App Store listing.
  • All billing is handled by Apple. We never see your payment details.
  • Cancel anytime: iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → MikeFoodCoach. Canceling during the trial means you're never charged; canceling later stops the next renewal, and you keep access through the period you've paid for.
  • Switched phones or reinstalled? Settings → Restore purchases picks your subscription back up — make sure you're signed into the same Apple account.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple for all App Store purchases: visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the MikeFoodCoach charge.
  • Sign in with Apple keeps your subscription recognized across reinstalls. We receive only your Apple account identifier and, if you share it, your first name.

Troubleshooting

The coach isn't responding

The coach needs an internet connection — your log is on-device, but the thinking happens in the cloud. Check your connection and try again. If you're connected and it still fails, give it a minute; if it persists, email us.

Talk mode can't hear me

Voice logging needs microphone and speech-recognition permission: iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone (and Speech Recognition) → allow MikeFoodCoach. Transcription happens on your device.

The coach isn't speaking out loud

Check the silent switch and volume first — it happens to everyone. You can also pick a different voice under Settings → Coach voice; higher-quality Apple voices can be downloaded in iPhone Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices.

Photo logging can't use my camera

iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → allow MikeFoodCoach. For library photos, allow photo access the same way.

An estimate looks wrong

Tell the coach — "that was a small bowl, not a large" — and it will revise the entry, or edit the entry directly. Mentioning amounts, brands, or weights up front gets better numbers.

Reminders aren't arriving

Make sure the reminder is on in Settings → Reminders, and that notifications are allowed in iPhone Settings → Notifications → MikeFoodCoach.

A meal was logged twice

Delete one copy from today's log (tap the day, swipe the entry). The coach actively guards against double-logging — it sees what's already saved today and asks before re-logging anything that looks like a duplicate.
